El Rio began her life in 1978 as a Leather Brazilian Gay Bar! Our Papa’s, Malcolm and Robert ran things until their retirement when the helm passed to The Posse. We are a LGBTQ+ space who is welcoming to all good people. We actively invest in communities to promote social change. We actively invest in our local arts and music scene to give space for artists. We actively pursue underserved communities in the use of our space.

Nearest BART is 12th St/Oakland City Center; AC Transit buses serve the area (e.g., Route 12). Jack London Square also has the Oakland–Jack London Square Amtrak station (245 2nd St) and SF Bay Ferry service; the free Oakland–Alameda Water Shuttle connects the square with Alameda Landing.
