Linda Tillery is a Grammy-nominated vocalist, percussionist, producer, educator, and cultural historian whose career spans more than five decades. Emerging from the Bay Area music scene in the late 1960s as a member of the psychedelic soul band The Loading Zone, she performed during the Fillmore, Winterland, and Carousel Ballroom era alongside artists such as Cream, Santana, Taj Mahal, Chuck Berry, and Big Brother and the Holding Company.
During the 1970s and 1980s, Tillery established herself as a distinctive solo artist and became an important presence in the Bay Area’s R&B, jazz, and Women’s Music communities. Her solo recording Linda Tillery received a Bay Area Music Award for Best Independently Produced Album, and she was twice honored as Outstanding Female Vocalist at the Bay Area Jazz Awards.
A founding member of Bobby McFerrin’s Voicestra, Tillery later expanded her artistic focus toward African diasporic vocal traditions, percussion, improvisation, and historical research.
She has appeared on more than 100 recordings with artists including Boz Scaggs, Linda Ronstadt, Santana, Mother Earth, Huey Lewis, Eric Bibb, and Holly Near.
In 1992, she founded Linda Tillery and the Cultural Heritage Choir, an ensemble dedicated to preserving and performing African American roots music, including spirituals, work songs, blues, gospel, ring shouts, and other traditions of the African Diaspora.
An acclaimed lecturer and master teacher, Tillery has presented residencies and workshops at institutions including Stanford University, Spelman College, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her work continues to bridge performance, scholarship, oral history, and cultural preservation.
