Mick Jagger phoned Harvey The Snake Mandel in the middle of the night in 1976 and flew him to Munich to audition as Mick Taylor's replacement. Mandel did not get the gig, but his playing is on Hot Stuff and Memory Motel on the Rolling Stones album Black and Blue. By then he had already played Woodstock with Canned Heat, cut USA Union and Back to the Roots with John Mayall, made his name on Charlie Musselwhite's Stand Back, and formed Pure Food and Drug Act with violinist Don Sugarcane Harris. The King of Sustain pioneered fretboard tapping on 1973's Shangrenade, years before Van Halen. He cut a live album right here in 2009. This room fills fast.
