Formed in 1976 under the name Warsaw, the group released the albums Unknown Pleasures (1979) and Closer (1980). Lead singer Ian Curtis died in May 1980, shortly before Closer's release; the band's recordings have been extensively anthologized and remain widely cited in music histories.
